Bear Paws – Medvědí tlapky

Ingredients:

Makes: About 10 dozen small ones
Prep: 30 min.
Hands on/Bake: 1 hr. 20 min.
Bake: at 350F for 9 min. on top rack
Sugar coating: 10 min.
Total: 2 hrs.

2 cups all purpose flour
1 1/4 cups powdered sugar
1 cup walnuts
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa
10 whole cloves or 1/4 tsp ground cloves
1 cinnamon stick or 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 lemon for zest
2 sticks (1 cup) unsalted butter
butter for coating the forms
Topping:
1 cup powdered sugar or 1 cup granulated white sugar ( to make your own powdered sugar )
1 vanilla bean

    thanks for the tip with the powdered sugar. I noticed before that the sugar was melting on my cookies, when I was covering them, but I’ve never had an idea why. I just didn’t remember that being the case in the Czech Rep. Now it makes sense.
    By the way, I’ve always understood that the name is connected to the shape of the original Czech molds used for these cookies. They resemble bear paws. They are actually still sold in the Czech Rep. You just have a set with different shapes, so the connection is not obvious.
